The Mindel Family and Samar Hospitality
Honorary Founder’s Award

The Mindel Family has been a loyal supporter of the Great Neck Arts Center for many years.  Sam and Mary Mindel were Holocaust Survivors that raised their children, Joseph, Marlene and Alan in Great Neck.  They believed strongly in supporting their community and instilled that in their children.  When they built the Inn at Great Neck, the realization of a long time family dream, incorporating an artistic touch was a must.  You can see their love of art throughout the Hotel; from the hand painted mural of the roaring 20’s to the gorgeous paintings in the restaurant.  Artistic design elements can also be found in the other Samar Hospitality hotels (named after Sam and Mary).  Most recently when the Viana Hotel and Spa was built, Alan truly focused on special design elements based on the ancient art of Feng Shui and specially commissioned art pieces to make the hotel a unique and stunning facility.

The Mindel Family has not only hosted many events for the Great Neck Arts Center at the Inn at Great Neck but has also catered events at the Center itself.  Alan and his wife Kara have brought their children there over the years to help continue their family legacy of love for the arts.  The Mindels are absolutely honored to be associated with and honored by the Great Neck Arts Center.

Susie Essman
Artist of Distinction, Comedy

Susie Essman has played the sassy Susie Greene for all eight seasons of the critically-acclaimed HBO comedy series Curb Your Enthusiasm.  Her hilarious bouts of withering sarcasm and uninhibited insults have become her character’s trademark.

The Los Angeles Times calls Susie “the most lyrical purveyor of profanity on television.  She makes the entire cast of The Sopranos look like rank amateurs.  It really is a gift.”  The New York Times called Susie “one of the most vivid characters in the show, whose off-color tantrums have become an audience favorite the way Kramer’s clumsy entrances once were.”

Susie’s streetwise vernacular is perfectly suited for her life in Manhattan where she has been a veteran of the world of stand-up comedy for twenty-nine years.  She has appeared in her own half-hour HBO comedy special, made numerous appearances on Late Night with Conan O’Brien, The View, and Crank Yankers, to name just a few of her many television credits.  She has also acted in numerous films, most recently costarring with John Travolta as the voice of Mittens the Cat in the Disney animated movie Bolt.

Susie’s book What Would Susie Say: Bullshit Wisdom About Love, Life and Comedy is published by Simon & Schuster and is now available in paperback. She divides her time between New York City and upstate New York where she lives with her husband Jimmy, four step-children, and dog.
